This series of classes runs every Monday from 1-3.30pm between the 13/07 and 7/09. It will encourage you to explore your own unique relationship with floral painting. It intends for you to learn the basics of Indian ink painting, collage and stamping so you can adapt any technique to your own style.

COURSE DESCRIPTION
This course is composed of 9 classes of 2.5 hours each, every Monday between 1pm and 3.30pm, from the 13th of July until the 7th of September. Each class is dedicated to a series of techniques, skills and personal explorations. You will learn about ink painting, various techniques of stamping and collage. You will also learn about classic and contemporary flower masters and how they have pushed the boundaries of floral representation in their own work.
WHO IS IT FOR
This program is for you if
- You are experimental, intuitive and desire to step outside of your comfort zone, loosen up and find new creative paths
- You want to build your painting and experimental skills
- You have little to no experience using ink, stamping or collage
- You are an experienced or an amateur artist willing to expand your own practice
- You are creatively independent and want to move beyond the fundamentals of floral painting
This series of classes is not intended to teach you botanical art nor to show you how to replicate another artist's artworks or to produce hyper realistic paintings.
OBJECTIVES
- Build strong foundations in black and white ink painting, stamping and collage
- Expand your knowledge in art history and techniques
- Obtain skills to build and maintain an independent artistic practice
- Develop confidence to undertake experimental technical/artistic approaches in developing your own style and creative potential
MATERIAL LIST
INK
Pigmented black ink or sumi-e ink (500ml)
Acrylic white ink (50 ml)
PAPER
Watercolour paper (A3 and A2, smooth/hot press, 270-300gsm, white)
Tissue (similar to wrapping paper, have a few sheets measuring 50x75cm, 17gsm, white)
Cartridge or craft paper (vb9A3 paper and A2, 150-250gsm, white)
Tracing paper (1xA4 pad, 25 to 50 sheets, about 50gsm, white or cream)
Ink painting paper such as (in order of preference) Ho-Sho paper, rice or mulberry paper roll, Khozo paper (equivalent of 5x A4 and 3xA2)
BRUSHES
1x nb 0 sable (for white ink) and 1x nb 2 acrylic brush (for glue)
a set of small and medium mop brushes (in total 3)
Chinese or Japanese bamboo brush with goat hair are great
1 large and 1 extra large brushes
goat hair fibers are best, though acrylic
fibres work fine too
STAMPING
If you already own stamping/printing material, please bring the equivalent of the list below
If you don’t own such material yet, the Derivan Block Ink Lino Printing Kit is a great investment at about $30, it includes
One Black ink colour in a 50ml jar
One 4″ (10cm) hard rubber roller
Carving tool set
One 15x11cm double sided vinyl lino tile
Palette Knife
Also bring a table spoon, extra rags and a plastic chopping board that will be used as a palette
CRAFT GLUE
250g bottle of white liquid craft or PVA glue. No transparent glue or glue sticks.
CONTAINERS
Recycle about 5 or 6 take away large, flat and rectangular containers, also bring the lids. Avoid tall and narrow glass containers (such as tomatoe sauce/jam jar).
Please, DO NOT buy plastic.
Bring an apron, butcher paper or news paper to protect your table, many rags, tissue/absorbant paper AND table + cooking salt
Feel free to bring colour inks if you think you cannot survive the black and white experience!
If you own a set of calligraphy brushes or ink stick and stone, bring them along.
